Vietnamese pond turtle

(Mauremys annamensis)

The Vietnamese Pond Turtle is one of the top 25 most endangered turtles and is considered functionally extinct in the wild. But there are numerous successful colonies in stations under human care in both Europe and the USA as well as in rescue centres in Vietnam.

The most important issue for this species is to identify and restore suitable habitat. Once sites are confirmed, populations can be restored with kept animals. Therefore, genetic screening beforehand is of great importance.
